Welcome to Bobby Flay Everyday!

I am not an expert. I have never even taken a class. I have no formal training - but I love to grill. I love the food off the grill and I just like the idea, the fun and the relaxation of grilling. So naturally Bobby Flay is a hero. I have his books, I watch his shows and I try out his recipes. So my idea is to grill one of Bobby's grilling recommendations everyday and see how it goes. Bobby Flay Everyday!

The idea to grill and blog is not original. Julie Powell wrote a blog that became a book and then a movie when she cooked all 524 recipes from Julia Child's cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. But this is not French Cooking - this is backyard, after work, tailgate, American male grilling. I grill outside in a man-cave in every kind of weather. There is no "grilling season" for me - its everyday, year-round. We will skip around through Bobby's books and TV shows and grill what we like. But grilling is more than food, its an experience - so we will also report on what music we listened to or what ball game was on while we were grilling. We will keep track of what we were drinking during the grilling and later with the food. I'll try to figure what went wrong when we fall short of Bobby's perfection and pass on any tips I know about or discover along the way. Maybe it will give others some ideas as well.

The photo is of me and two of my brother-in-laws roasting the Thanksgiving turkey on the grill last year. That's me on the far right. In real life I am a college professor and pilot. I have written 12 books, but they were all about flying - here we write about grilling. We write about Bobby Flay Everyday!

Breakfast from the Grill

Bobby Flay’s Breakfast Burger! We were away Sunday night, so I decided to get my grilling fix in the morning. I did substitute Canadian Bacon for a hamburger patty, and used an English muffin instead of a traditional bun – but it worked. I used a cast iron skillet and a tomato sauce can to cook the eggs on the grill. I also grilled “home fries.” The home fries were a Bobby recipe from one of his TV shows – they are sort of like chunky hash browns. The muffins and bacon were grilled right on the grates and the whole thing assembled/stacked right on the grill.

Wisdom of the Grill. Tomato sauce can? Yes, I had an empty can so I cut out both the top and bottom of the can forming a cylinder that was open on both ends. I placed one open end of the cylinder on the hot skillet and poured in the eggs from the top. That made an egg ring. I placed a foil-covered brick on top of the can to keep the eggs and heat inside – but some got away anyway. The eggs cooked inside the cylinder in about four minutes. When they were done, I ran a spatula under the can and delivered the ring of eggs directly to the muffin.

What was on? For years we have watched the CBS Sunday Morning show. It is really the only news magazine show I can watch anymore. While other shows feature people yelling over each other, while saying "let me finish” the CBS show is civil and just better than listening in on a argument. Maybe its just fatigue from years of fighting the good fight, but I just have no interest in partisanship.  There are people who just have a different opinion and yelling at them will not change their mind. Did last summer’s tea-partiers think that acting like idiots would change anyone’s mind? I have no time for that kind of stuff anymore. Here is a tip: When Charles Osgood says, “We leave you this Sunday Morning in ...the Everglades of Florida (or where ever),” quickly switch to the Food Network because Bobby Flay’s Grill It! TV show will be coming on. There the only arguing on that show will be about how much cayenne to put in a barbecue sauce!

Weather Report. I was grilling in the daylight for the first time in a long time. It was still cold – we have not been above freezing since January 2nd – but it was clear and the sun was out so it just seemed better.
Any meal and almost any food can be prepared on the grill – maybe not ice cream (on second thought ice cream might have worked when it was 9 degrees!). We will keep expanding the linits.
